Sizzle Reels

Sizzle reel media L3 Y1:

I had the intro of each of my films play at the beginning of my sizzle reel, it wasn't my intention but I feel this perfectly incapsulates how manic this year of filmmaking was for me. The first film is of a silent movie I started work on midway through filming, I got to help with some of the shots and I then edited it, I did a trick I'm very proud of involving the film slowly getting less and less saturated as she gets closer to the man, I had a audio advert I made play over so i could smoothly transition to my visual one, I did this by cropping the audio for a glitch effect similar to my first sizzle reel. The next short is related to a task in which we had to make a short movie out of only stock footage. I've never understood this task but that was the best I could make. I then used the horror to transition to one of my favourite scenes from my short film of this year. This short movie was a massive mess due to me choosing quantity over quality, actors always being late or cancelling and me having a writers block that delayed work on the script. I then show a bad attempt at stop motion before the final clip. The clip shown is of the ending to my obstacles music video, I aimed to showcase the beauty of life with. Meanwhile a monologue plays over, this is the entire monologue from the ending of my short film and it was my favourite thing to come out of it, I feel the monologues voice acting was near perfect and it was one of my favourite pieces to write.

Sizzle reel Media L2:

I'm really proud of my first year in media. The weakest thing I made was the animation but considering I had no prior animating experience and I have never been a good drawer I'm not too upset at that being bad. The car you briefly see in this reel was actually a collaboration with another student that we made for stem live. The idea was an ordinary car commercial (that the student made) would be glitched and cut up scenes of my parody advert would play. I decided to add this plot to my sizzle reel as I felt it'd make things feel much more seamless, the animation kicks off with a animation of people watching a monitor and the rest of the reel is excused by the hacking. There is a snippet of my radio drama a story I am still proud of to this day, the snippet involves one of my favourite confrontations in the radio drama, as it brings to light the morals of the characters. The rebels are siding with something untrustworthy, but they're willing to put all their hope into it as it promises them freedom from the control of the government and to allow them to truly be themselves. My black flies music video is also something I'm incredibly proud of and this sizzle reel doesn't do it any justice due to time and transition reasons.

Obstacles fan music video:

This isn't as good as my black flies music video from the year before, but I still love what I did with this. The message of this music video was less based on the song (which I assume is about growing up) and instead about the beauty of life. I chose this song as it's a beautiful and calming song that really helps with my point of the video, showing all the beautiful aspects of life. I also chose this song as I feel, as we grow up we struggle to appreciate how amazing life is, so in a way the song being about growing up is saying how you shouldn't forget to look at the beauty that's still there. I showed the beauty of life by showing enjoyment with friends and games, I provided lots of people helping each other as I feel that's very beautiful. I showed one of my favourite movies and game that I believe personify these points. I also showed warm and cosy rooms with beautiful lights. I believe for the most part achieved this.

If I was to change anything it'd be how out of focus some shots are.

The story of trust, control and a cockatoo trailer:

This is easily my most rushed project, it truly sucks because similarly to "the case of class 33" I was incredibly proud of this script but due to a massive writers block, actors consistently being late to recordings or cancelling and me choosing quantity over quality, it came out as a rushed and messily edited film. This trailer shows the best and worst of it, the special effects I think still hold up for the most part considering the budget (excluding the smoke effect which was so bad I accidentally left a logo in). The acting for the most part holds up as well, but there are so many lines I wish I could've re-recorded and given more care with, the film was so rushed there's even a scene where you can see a whole slew of props that I forgot to remove. Even the trailer was rushed as some audio cuts out. Another thing I hated about this project was I could never get consistent lighting due to being filmed in the summer and again because of my rush to get through it, because of this the scenes have completely different saturation and lighting levels, I tried to transition through this in the film and I think it mostly works but in the trailer you can see how egregious it truly was. Underneath it all though I still truly believe there is a good script.

Temple of toon returns! advert:

Similar to the bombastic advert this was an over the top parody of adverts, although this time from the 80s/90s. The advert was actually promoting a real product unlike my last advert, this promoted one of my lecturers podcasts called "the temple of tomb". I tried to make the advert as authentic as possible to the time and also did a fun editing trick, when the actor gets given the phone and headphones, a quick jump cut switched them out for a cassette to showcase how the podcast takes you back in time and furthermore parodies gimmicky adverts of the 80s. I also added a very subtle grain to replicate the feeling of the 80s adverts however, I feel it should have been made more obvious.

I'm somewhat disappointed at how similar the ideas are and even more so than before I wish I could've done something more creative and unique. The cuts are also nowhere near as smooth as I'd hope and my voice over sounds way too disinterested for the advert.

Black flies:

This is my favourite project as I it turned out almost exactly how I wanted it to. Black flies is one of my favourite songs, I love it because of how haunting yet calming it feels, and I love how the lyrics are all said in metaphors so truly anyone can relate to it. To me the relatability is what makes this song so special and I wanted to emulate that with my music video, every shot in the video is supposed to mean something, they're all metaphors of loss or feeling lost, but they can have different meanings from person to person. The dead animal shot, can be a metaphor of losing someone or something to death, or it could mean something deeper, the fact it's a roadkill could mean it's a metaphor for feeling deflated and hopeless similarly, to how the burger missing a burger and phone case missing a phone signified the feeling of emptiness or missing something.

My biggest issue with this music video was some shots were way too shaky due to lack of tripod and some shots weren't filmed for long enough causing awkward cuts.

Bombastic advert:

This was made to be a parody of early 2000s adverts while also being a cover up for a shady business. The idea was based on things like Saul Goodman's and los polos Hermanos adverts in breaking bad, but parodying slightly more modern adverts. There's lots of over editing and bright colours to make fun of the genre. I purposely made the acting feel incredibly fake and under acted to make the advert more funny and replicate some adverts from the 2000s. In the final dance I hid numerous messages that would immediately get covered up by the companies number to hint at the dark undertones of the advert and scummy businessman.

My biggest issue with this advert is probably, how quite the voice lines can be which was not intentional and can ruin some of the jokes. I also think the idea wasn't as ambitious as I'd like and I wish I either did more with it or tried something different all together

The case of class 33:

This is one of my favourite projects of all time, the story has a 1940s esque setting that also mixes with advanced technology and sci fi aspects. My aim was to show factors of a war and both the bad and the good. Gerald and Patricia are created to give an insight into the rebellion, one is shown to blindly follow their rebellious leaders while the other is shown to be a bit more sceptical, their part of the story ends with them discovering their leaders aren't what they seem. Meanwhile we show Jameson and the unnamed government leader, this is meant to show the conflict of the war, the rebels wanting freedom and peace, the government wanting control and to end the rebellions leaders.

I think my biggest issue with this story was telling it through a radio drama as you can't fully understand the unique futurism meets 1940 and it makes things like the rebellions leader being a robot harder to understand. I also had a couple moments where sound effects were way too loud.
